A Golden Retriever With a Rare Heart-Shaped Birthmark Is Capturing Hearts Online

Dogs have certainly stolen our hearts, and this sweet Golden Retriever has the trophy to show for it. We don’t see a lot of these beasties with birthmarks because they don’t show up very often. But when they do, it somehow makes the beloved pup even sweeter. As one commenter, @SaintBernadettes, put it, “He’s kissed by perfection.”
The on-screen text gives us more details behind this guy’s beauty spot: “We got a purebred Golden Retriever so rare, they don’t even have a statistic for his black heart birthmark.” You really have to watch the clip to believe how much the fur patch looks exactly like a heart. He’s a special guy!
Viewers absolutely loved the good boy and gave many different takes on what the birthmark might represent. “That’s his kissing spot. Kiss him there every day,” @Cekern0 explained. Others decided it was a sign from doggie heaven, like @Campbell9498 with, “That’s definitely a hello from a former pet.” @Heather took it a step further: “Did you perhaps have a black animal that had passed prior to getting this pup? Looks like maybe a heart sent to you from them.” So pure!

What Causes a Dog’s Unusual Birthmark?
Like humans, dogs can get birthmarks, but some are more common than others. Spots on their tongues are fairly regular and nearly always harmless natural pigmentation variation. Some pooches have spots on their skin as well.
Mismarks (a term for what the Golden in this video likely has) in fur work a bit differently. Guide Dogs for the Blind takes a deep dive into explaining the phenomenon on a genetic level. Here’s how we will sum it up: Sometimes a mutation in the fur coat gene in an area causes it to produce dark fur instead of light fur. It doesn’t impact offspring and has essentially no side effects. Think of it more like natural highlights but rarer. The group titles this post, “One in a Million!” though they certainly don’t mean that as a literal statistic.
Luckily for the adorable buddy in this video, the heart gives him an extra reason to get all the pets.
